rain-drops on roses

On the way into Houston I saw a pool of water glistening under the city lights. Rather than reflecting the buildings around the pond, the lights stared down on a murky brown water. It wouldn't have been a particularly memorable experience if it hadn't been for the idea that entered my head at that moment. As I pondered the pool's absorbtion of light, a thought flittered into my head: What if that pool was a mirror that reflected your thoughts? And so, I wrote this poem.

What if my thoughts were the dew on the grass:
glistening, sparkling, under the sun.
Would they linger, a sign of life,
or shrink away when the day was half done?

What if my thoughts were a pool in a city:
reflecting the world all around.
Would it be murky, as the future ahead,
or like a fresh spring newly found?

What if my thoughts were reflected upon:
as a mirror reflects open space.
Would they be pure, deserving of room,
or only add the the dreary wall's face?

Where is my focus?
"Let your eyes look forward;
fix your gaze straight ahead.
Carefully consider the path for your feet,
and all your ways will be established.
Don't turn to the right or to the left;
keep your feet away from evil. "
Proverbs 4:25-27
