The psalms are full of pleas to bring the author's enemies/persecutors to justice. When I read stories like this one, which highlight the atrocities human beings can commit against each other, I sympathize with the writers of the psalms. "Please Lord," I pray, "bring these men to justice."
But then, a twinge of guilt pierces my mind. "You're just as guilty as they are, yet God offered you mercy. What right do you, who received mercy, have to wish that someone else will receive justice?"
And yet, another thought also occurred to me. The mercy I received did not undermine justice, for God's justice was satisfied through Jesus' sacrifice.
But still, I'm left in a quandary. As Christians, how should we feel and respond towards evil? How do we balance the justice of found in Psalm with Jesus' command to love our enemies?
How do we both act justly and love mercy?
