Be Thou My Vision: Preparing for Nepal

I was recently reminded that our calling is never to something, but rather Someone: Jesus. This reminder is particularly relevant as I prepare to be part of a Christian organizations “Vision Team” in Nepal.

Since I’m a Christian, God has charged me to be the Kingdom! I was created to love the people Christ loves and to share His passion for justice and mercy. God has prepared me for this task by placing me in certain situations and relationships. He has also given me specific gifts, talents, and passions. I’m naturally a teacher; I’ve had the opportunity to become an apologist, and I long to abolish slavery. I do not want to waste these gifts. Instead, I’m intentionally seeking the BEST way to glorify God with my life. This searching is the motivation behind my trip to Nepal.

And yet, I’m realizing that in seeking what God wants for my life, I’m often tempted to replace my relationship with a plan. My vision should never be to teach children, to defend Christianity, or to end slavery. These dreams are Kingdom work, and God has directed me to fulfill them. The moment that one of these dreams becomes my ultimate ambition, however, it has become an idol. My experience with Vision Team should not center on seeking a vision. I already have one: Jesus.  Instead, my time with Vision Team should focus on following Christ as He shows me how to love “the least of these.”

Give me one pure and holy passion
Give me one magnificent obsession
Give me one glorious ambition for my life:
to know and follow hard after You.

Therefore, since there is such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every weight & sin which clings so closely, & let us run with endurance the race set before us, setting our eyes on Jesus, the author & perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross.
