Hey everyone! I’ve wanted to post the past couple of days, but I’ve been so busy! (And classes don’t even start until tomorrow!). Orientation has been a blast, and I’m feeling pretty settled in my room. There are so many things to be involved in here, I’m glad that necessity dictates I pick and choose. Right now I’m skipping an activity called stance (“standing dance”). I’m beginning to figure out that I really don’t like large groups of people. Twenty or thirty is fine, two or three is best, but a couple hundred is just plain overwhelming. I’d rather meet a limited number of people and form a relationship with them than go to a large (loud!) party. Thankfully most of our classes are thirty or less.
On that note, classes start in the morning, and I’m very excited. My first class is a Bible class at 8:00 am, and because I’m on the honors floor and it’s required for all the freshman honors students, it consists of everyone on my floor (and pretty much no-one else).
Yesterday my room-mate Julia and I attended church at Hope Fellowship, followed by a potluck afterwards. A missionary from Mali was speaking, and he great news to share with us about the things God is doing there. Then, at 9:00 a lot of us crowed into a tiny little white church on campus called Spear Chapel for the student led Praise and Prayer which is held there weekly. They used an old overhead projector to put the words on the wall, and after songs we split into small groups and prayed for each other. It was very different from Chapel, which is held in the Belcher Center, and is a lot like a Christian concert.
Today Julia and I ran a couple of miles on the indoor track. (Can you say air conditioning? It’s been over a hundred degrees!) After dinner some of us kids from Davis 1 visited the store to get supplies to make Hershey pies and a Carrot cake. (There are two birthdays on our floor this week, and in addition to sticky-noting their door, we want to surprise them with something home-made!)
While most of the girls’ floors have 40-60 girls, ours only has 8! Excluding the Chaplin and RA there are 6 of us. Since we have such a small floor we’re already pretty close. Being in the honors program means that we several classes together, and we often eat together with are "brother floor". We also have an open door policy, which means that we’re welcome in each other’s rooms any time the inhabitant is “home”.
I’m really glad to be here on campus, the general atmosphere created by the student body and faculty is great, and know that God has plans for us. Please be praying for me and the other students, as the year is about to get really busy! Feel free to text, facebook, or (even better), write me. I would love to hear about things back at home.
